My Story…
I am 47 years old and was raised in Avoca by my parents, Donald and
Karen Collins. I currently reside in Dupont with my wife of 21 years,
Kim, and our four children Marcus (16), Emily (14), Alexandra (12), and
Maxwell (10). I graduated from Pittson Area High School in 1996, received my associate's degree from Lackawanna College, and my bachelor's and master's degree from Keystone College. I am employed by Lackawanna College as a full-time
faculty member in the Social Sciences Division and also work in the
Center for Teaching and Learning within the college. I am also the
Chief Administrator for VisionQuest National, a national comprehensive
child, youth, and family services organization that provides care
services such as residential programming, community-based services,
and in-home services for children and their families.
In my spare time I spend every free second possible taking part in the activities that my children participate in such as their school sports leagues, travel sports leagues, and little league sports. I assist with and coach in the softball program at Grind Athletics in West Pittston and have been a baseball and softball coach in the
Township Baseball Little League for many years. Currently, I am the
Vice-President of softball for Township Little League.
Unfortunately, cancer is no stranger to my family and friends. I have
watched as many people very close to me have battled this terrible
disease. Being asked to participate in the Gentleman's Dash means
more to me than many people will ever know. I have considered Barb
and her husband, Sal, to be friends of mine for many years, and just
being asked to be a small part of this is an absolute honor.
I am running this race in honor of two very important people to me, my aunt, Linda Collins, and my wife's uncle, Nicky Serniak, who have battled cancer with everything they had and came away victorious. I will also be running this race in memory of my aunt, Debbie Wiliams, my grandmother, Shirley Davis, my wife's grandfather, Nick Serniak, and her aunt, Barbara Serniak, for whom I can hopefully be a
voice for in the search for a cure to cancer.
“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat
cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you
live.”
