"In 2013, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at 16 years old. What followed were several years that tested my body, my spirit & my ability to hold on to joy. I went through chemotherapy, surgery & eventually a stem cell transplant. For me, the hardest part was the feeling that no one truly understood what I was going through. At Rapahope, I was just me. I didn’t have to hide my chemo-fried hair, my scars, or the way I would get fatigued so easily. I could be normal.
I returned to Rapahope as a counselor in 2021 & haven’t missed a camp week since! I come back each year because I want every camper to experience what I did— a place where joy exists in abundance. I’ve learned that healing doesn’t occur through treatment alone. Healing happens around a campfire, in a messy cabin, at the lake, over a fierce game of spoons — healing happens at Rapahope."
