The 3rd Annual High Strides Against Diabetes highlights the missions of two local farms to improve the lives of their communities through education about the benefits of healthy eating. Kim High, the visionary behind the 5K, Ms. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, and Dione Sims, the sponsor of Opal's Farm, have suffered the diagnosis of diabetes. Ms. Opal manages her symptoms with medication, Dione, through weight loss, while Kim has been able to control her diagnosis with dietary changes.
In addition to increasing awareness around the issue of healthy food access, promoting wellness, and elevating education, the 5K Fun Run will help both organizations implement a fresh market stand on their farms that will allow residents to access fresh, healthy foods more consistently.
