Volunteer Roles
Hello, and thanks for your interest in volunteering with the Harriers at one of our fall Thetis races. Below is a brief description of each role:
- Equipment Loading & Delivery - we usually require a few hardy souls (access to a vehicle with storage space is very helpful) to pick up race gear at PIH HQ and deliver to the beach.
- Equipment Unloading - exactly as it sounds. Unloading vehicles and carrying equipment to the beach. (We are no longer permitted to drive and/or park vehicles on the beach itself.)
- Start/Finish line setup - putting up signs, flagging and stakes/barriers to create the start and/or finish areas, which will vary by race.
- Registration - check in registrants, hand out race numbers and other items, field questions about the race course, etc.
- Course layout - flagging the course. Due to CRD restrictions, we do all the flagging and sign installation on race day, as signs are not permitted to be left out overnight. Requires a good knowledge of the trails, and a GPS device (ie. phone) is quite handy.
- Lead runner - we usually employ a lead runner to ensure that all the signage is in place and instructions are clear. Also requires a good knowledge of the trails.
- Marshal - marshals are out on the course directing traffic, ensuring everyone goes the right way, and acting as contact points for the race director. Plus they get to cheer everyone on!
- Refreshments - definitely one of the most important jobs. You get to hand out the food! Automatically you will be everyone's best friend.
- Sweep / deflagging - running the course as the last person, checking to make sure there are no participants still out on course, and picking up signs and flags. Also requires a good knowledge of the trails, and a GPS device (ie. phone) is very helpful.
- Teardown and cleanup - taking tents down, packing up equipment and vehicles, cleaning out food serving equipment (if required), that sort of thing.
- Truck unloading - unloading the gear post-race at PIH HQ.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email the race director, or our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@pih.bc.ca.
Thanks for volunteering with the Harriers!
