My Story…

Running for Hannah: Fundraiser for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice

My name is Igor, and this is the story of why I run.

On September 8, 2024, I laced up my running shoes for the first time in many years. I had just celebrated my birthday, and getting older makes you do all sort of things sometimes, but really I was just reflecting on my future and how it should look like. I was preparing for the most important role of my life - becoming a dad. I wanted to be stronger, healthier, ready to keep up with my baby girl when she arrived, and frankly, I was just really out of shape.

.

To push myself, I signed up for the BMO Half Marathon. It felt like a bold, exciting challenge, something to mark this new chapter in my life.

Then everything changed.

On October 19, the day before her due date, my wife had a feeling—something wasn’t right. We went to the hospital, expecting to either be sent home or to finally meet our daughter and bring her home. Instead, our world shattered.

Our baby girl, Hannah, was born on October 19, but she did not come home with us. She passed away before we could get to know her.

As “luck” would have it, the only available day for Hannah burial landed on Oct 31st, instead of going trick or treating - she left us forever.

For weeks, I abandoned the idea of running. I had started this journey to be active with her, to chase her through parks, to run beside her as she learned to ride a bike. Without her, it felt meaningless. But then I realized—I could still run for her. I could run with her, in my heart and in my thoughts.

So I did.

Every step I take is for Hannah. Every mile is a way to honor her. And now, I want to turn this journey into something bigger.

I am raising funds for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, who provide care and comfort to families facing unimaginable loss, and Sad Dads Club, a community that has given me strength in my darkest days. These organizations help parents like me find light when everything feels dark.
