What is Multiple Sclerosis?

MS is a disease that causes the immune system to eat away at myelin, the nerves' protective coverings, resulting in communication disruption between the brain and body. Symptom severity and duration vary widely across people: some individuals are symptom free most of their lives, while others experience debilitating fatigue, muscle spasms, vision and mobility problems, anxiety and depression, and pain among other symptoms throughout their lifetime.

What does the National MS Society do? 

The National MS Society's primary aim is to end MS. It funds MS research, provides professional education programs, produces educational materials such video aids and brochures, and provides resources on diagnosing, living with, and treating MS, among other activities. How do I know my money is being used responsibly? 

The National MS Society meets the National Health Council Standards of Excellence's highest standards of accountability, ethical practice, organizational effectiveness, and good public stewardship as well as all 20 of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards. They are rated three out of four stars by Charity Navigator. Per their GuideStar profile, the bulk of their expenses go toward program services. Their financials are available here.

What else can I do? 

There are plenty of ways to get involved without spending a penny! You can participate in a research study, volunteer, advocate for policy changes, and participate in Walk MS.
