When you hear the word cancer, your world stops. And while there’s never a good time to have a cancer diagnosis, there are particular challenges that come with being a young adult diagnosed with cancer - from the lack of financial stability to trying to build a life just getting started. In my case, I was navigating my diagnosis while caring for my first baby who was about to turn one.

Call it fate or divine timing, but while driving home from a tearful PET scan, I caught an interview on the radio with YASU founder Stephanie Samolovitch. A survivor herself, Stephanie created Young Adult Survivors United (YASU) to support people like me - young adults facing cancer in the midst of building their futures. Through support groups, retreats, and genuine connection, YASU helped me find strength, hope, and lifelong community.

Today, I’m proud to be running the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay to raise money for Young Adult Survivors United - to give back to the incredible group that supported me when I needed it most. Their work provides critical resources, hope, and connection during life’s most overwhelming moments.

This year, I reflect on eight years post-diagnosis. And while cancer is still the monster on my shoulder, I face it with a powerful network behind me. Every step I take is for the fighters, the survivors, and the families still on this journey.
