My Story…
Alright, so I know it’s a little bit late to set up a fundraising page given that the race is tomorrow, but I wanted to do it because I’m going to be running anyways, and we might as well raise some money for a cool cause if I’m going to (probably but maybe I will run well lol) suffer through 13.1 miles of running!!
I chose to run on behalf of the Mario Lemieux Foundation. You may ask “what does the Mario Lemieux Foundation do?”
The Mario Lemieux Foundation was founded in 1993 by hockey legend Mario Lemieux. Enjoying the most prolific season of his career and on-pace to set an NHL scoring record that year, Mario was suddenly diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. Now 30 years cancer-free, Mario continues to assist others in their cancer battles and devotes much of his time to the Foundation in pursuit of a goal more significant than any in his storied career: A cure for cancer. To date, the Foundation has committed more than $37 million to cancer research and patient care initiatives in the Pittsburgh region and beyond.
Mario‘s midseason comeback from his cancer treatment in 1993 (where after getting his final cancer treatment, he got directly on a plane, skated onto the ice in Philadelphia, and got a standing O from the crowd and ripped off win #1 of 17 in a row, which is a record that still stands today) is one of my favorite all time Pittsburgh sports stories. Mario also became the points leader that year basically against all odds after missing 23 games for his treatment.
His foundation and the patients and families they serve deserve your support if you can swing it!! Thank you all, love ya.
Description
Please donate to help me raise money for the Mario Lemieux Foundation as part of the 2025 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Run for a Reason program!
Since their founding in 1993, the Mario Lemieux Foundation has been focused on finding a cure for cancer by funding research and patient care, and supporting families in challenging medical situations. Through ongoing projects at the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers, the Mario Lemieux Lymphoma Center, the Mario Lemieux Immunotherapy Center, and the recently established Mario Lemieux Center for Heart Rhythm Care, we support research that translates to clinical trails and innovative therapies that save lives.
