My Story…
Last year I decided to join team Strong Like Sloane after learning about it via my friend Tristin. (@kinsfootprints). Claire (Sloanes mom) had posted some very touching information online. stories of her beautiful brave daughter and her cancer journey. Learning that Childhood cancer research only receives 7% of funds is a heartbreaking statistic when you’ve watched friends and their sweet children be affected by cancer. As a young child myself my best friend Cassandra Shackleford passed away suddenly from cancer. I think of her and her family often. I wish they hadn’t had to experience the loss of their child and no parent should have to. Claire warmly encouraged me to train for the 10km and it was such a wonderful experience. Every time I went out for a run I remembered “yes this is hard, but so is chemo”. I am going for the half marathon this year, as an extra challenge:) If I walk, run, jog or sprint it, I’ll be thinking of the kids every step of the way. I am running for Kinley, Sloane, and Cassandra🩷
Where Your Donations Go
This year, all funds will support pharmacogenomics research at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Chemotherapy often causes serious, life-threatening side effects in young patients, leading to lifelong disabilities, early death, and increased healthcare costs. Pharmacogenetic testing helps doctors determine how a child may respond to chemotherapy, allowing for safer, more effective treatments that reduce toxic side effects and improve long-term health outcomes.
