My Story…
Last summer, my family went on a trip to the Yellowstone National Park -- a lifelong bucket list destination for my dad. But this is also when we noticed he started limping on his left leg.
That moment we knew, it was the beginning of a horrible, terminal genetic disease that already claimed two lives in our tightly-knitted family: my grandmother and my aunt.
ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) slowly takes away your power to control your muscle. I watched my dad from being able to run a 10km race with me, to being confined to his wheelchair and his ventilator 24/7.
Six month later, we said goodbye to my dad.
It was not an outcome we wanted, but in the six short months we had, we were able to spend as much time as we could with my dad at the comfort of our home, thanks to ALS Society who stepped up in so many ways.
They lended us a bed when my dad can no longer go up and down the stairs; a ramp so my dad could make his doctor appointments. And the most importantly, they lended us a wheelchair so my dad and my family could go out, for the very last time, to see the zoolights.
All of these medical equipments would have costed us thousands of dollars that we don't have, and ALS Society let us borrow their equipments, completely free of charge.
Our family's story isn't unique. 3,000 Canadians are currently living with ALS. This is why I am running my first marathon in his memory and fundraising for ALS Society, to help people like my dad to spend their last few moments of their lives at home with their loved ones. Thank you for reading my story and if you have the means to, please donate to ALS Society.
