On August 2, 2025, I’ll be diving back into Lake Superior for my second Point to LaPointe Open Water Swim, a 2.1-mile swim from Bayfield to Madeline Island. Last year, after training at the Bayfield Rec Center, I completed my first race on a perfectly calm, glassy lake at sunrise, surrounded by volunteers in kayaks and motorboats. It was a perfect day to cap off 8 months of training, learning to ask for and allowing myself to accept support, and reacquainting myself with an activity that supports my physical and mental wellbeing. 

Thanks to this community’s generosity last year, I now have the gear I once lacked—my wetsuit, GPS watch, training fins, and safety buoy—and I’ve learned so much about swimming. Not just how to move through water, but how to listen to my body, adapt to conditions, and support others doing the same. With sponsorship this year from Honest Dog Books (my employer, a Gold sponsor for the race, and a 1% for Rec partner), all of the funds I raise for my swim will directly benefit Bayfield Recreation and Fitness Resources.

Bayfield RFR is the host of the only public pool within a 70-mile radius, it’s a hub for physical, emotional, and social well-being for me and to many in the Chequamegon Bay community. Since completing my swim last year, I’ve become a certified lifeguard and I now watch over other swimmers as they move through the water. It’s also where I continue to train with the Rec Center’s new adult swim team, a group with all levels of experience who meet weekly to grow stronger and more confident together.
