CHANNEL CHALLENGE
550m Channel Swim & 2km Bridge Run
Leg 3 of the Bass Coast Series
Saturday 1st March @ 2:00pm
The iconic San Remo Channel Challenge is Victoria’s Premier Aquathon event hosted by the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
The swim/run is the highlight of a day-long festival. The town of San Remo comes to life with market stands, various food vendors, live music and other festivities. You don't have to be a participant in the main event to enjoy the day; there is something for everyone.
The event is a major fundraiser for Woolamai Beach SLSC. All proceeds support volunteer patrols at Woolamai Beach and Smiths Beach, and the lifesaving services which support the wider Phillip Island community.
The swim is a distance of 550 metres starting from San Remo on the mainland and crossing the Westernport channel to Newhaven which is situated on Phillip Island.
San Remo is a fishing village situated on the mainland of South Gippsland and in the Shire of Bass Coast; approximately 125km south-east of Melbourne.
Due to the strong tide flow through the channel the swim can only take place on the slack water of the appropriate high tide and swimmers come ashore at Newhaven on the north side of the channel. Slack water of the high tide lasts approximately fifteen- twenty minutes in which time competitors must complete the swim.
After the competitors complete the swim leg they run barefoot into the grassy transition area at Newhaven on Phillip Island and after donning their running shoes they start the run back to San Remo. The 2 kilometre run back up over the picturesque Phillip Island Bridge to the township of San Remo spreads the runners out, and makes a spectacular sprint to the finish line in the main street where the large crowds urge the participants on.
The Channel Challenge has prizes awarded to category competitors in junior, senior, open and local competitors in age categories for both males and females. Total prizes include $3,000 in cash plus $3,000 worth of products and services. All participants receive a Channel Challenge T-Shirt (Nominate your T-Shirt size during registration. Please note, for those registering after Sunday Feb 23, your selected T-Shirt size may be unavailable)
The San Remo Channel Challenge is one of three events which comprise the Bass Coast Summer Series. Participants can earn points by finishing in the ranked positions (1-20) within the relevant categories. The three events are the Cape Aquathon, San Remo Channel Challenge and the Cowes Classic and there is prize-money awarded to the overall category series winners.
