My Story…

Help Me Support St. Joseph’s Day Surgery & Urology Team!

This year started with an unexpected challenge: I had kidney stones on both my right and left sides. It was a painful and unforgettable experience, to say the least, but it became a story of hope and gratitude thanks to the exemplary care I received at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

From the moment I was assigned Dr. Lambe as my urologist, I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Lambe quickly put a plan into action, arranging numerous scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds to get a clear picture of my condition. Each appointment was not only efficient but also infused with empathy and care. Whether through the healthcare app or interactions with the hospital staff, the communication was consistently clear, compassionate, and reassuring.

Honestly, I believe the healthcare professionals at St. Joseph’s must take a course in empathy—because they’ve turned it into a superpower! I aspire to learn that level of care and connection myself.

I was placed on the emergency waitlist for surgery and, within days, I was in the operating room. The experience was remarkable from start to finish. I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to the incredible team who supported me:

Krista, my nurse, made me feel like I was her only patient (even though I know she treats everyone this way!).Brenda, Jen, Neil the Porter, and everyone else on the front-line team were equally amazing.Dr. Guo, who performed the surgery, and Dr. Chan, the anesthesiologist, were outstanding.Christine, who walked me out to my car, made sure I left with dignity and care.

It’s strange to say this, but I had a genuinely great experience undergoing surgery. Every member of the team treated me with respect, empathy, and even indulged my attempts at humor along the way.

As a Canadian, I feel incredibly fortunate to have access to such high-quality healthcare. And as someone who lives and works in Hamilton, I’m grateful to be surrounded by world-class facilities and professionals.

This year, I’m taking on the 30km Around the Bay race to give back. As an architect with mcCallumSather, I’ve had the privilege of designing healthcare environments where these professionals provide life-changing care. Now, I’m running to support the Day Surgery and Urology Team at St. Joseph’s Hospital, who made such an impact on my life.

I invite you to join me in supporting this exceptional team. Together, we can ensure they continue to deliver compassionate, world-class care to everyone who walks through their doors.

Thank you for your support—and for helping me say “thank you” to the incredible people at St. Joseph’s!

Description

Welcome to my fundraising page!

This year, I’m taking on the Around the Bay Road Race (ATB) and raising funds to support St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation. St. Joe’s is in many ways the heart of Hamilton – nearly everyone in our community has been touched by the incredible patient care they provide.

Your donation to my run will support the robotic surgery revolution underway at St. Joe’s. Over the past 12 years, more than 4,500 people have received robotic surgery and dozens of research studies have shown they’re experiencing smaller incisions that heal faster, with less scarring, and reduce the chance of infection, too. But what’s more, is that robotic surgery patients are going home sooner, with fewer post-operative complications and a quicker return to their lives and families.

Here’s the challenge: Robotic surgery is so new that only 3 of the 10 types of robotic surgery performed at St. Joe’s are funded by the province. For surgeries to help those needing a hip or knee replacement, and to treat those living with oral, esophageal, lung and bladder cancers, the Hospital relies on donations to events like the Bay Race. Let’s bring the power of robotic surgery to every patient who would benefit from it.

Thank you for donating to my run and for fueling the future of care at St. Joe’s.
