Help us fundraise to support people experiencing poverty and homelessness in Vancouver! 

Megaphone exists to change the story on poverty by amplifying marginalized voices and creating meaningful work. We do this by producing publications and training over 150 people each year to sell them legally on the street. Vendors purchase Megaphone products at a wholesale cost and sell them at retail prices, keeping the profits to help meet their basic needs. 

It all started with Megaphone magazine in 2007, featuring community journalism focused on poverty and related issues, as well as art and culture. Today, the magazine is developed by a team of peer journalists—individuals with lived experience of poverty—who report on vital issues under the mentorship of our Local Journalism Initiative Reporter/Mentor. We also offer regular skill-building workshops in creative writing, journalism, and photography. The majority of content in our publications comes directly from the street, created by residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where we operate a low-barrier, publicly accessible office. Vendors are supported in their street sales through direct staff support, branded vendor gear, complimentary product and peer mentorship.

By supporting our campaign, you are creating opportunities for individuals facing barriers to traditional employment to run their own micro-business, earn self-determined income, and build meaningful connections in the community. 

Participating in and donating to our 5K charity race brings people together to take direct action—and helps change the story on poverty.
