Our story…

Mason was born at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s hospital in June of 2017.  Prior to his birth, he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), which is a birth defect where the left side of the heart does not develop or does not develop enough to function after birth.  About 1 out of every 4,344 babies born in the United States each year is born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. HLHS requires a series of 3 open-heart surgeries to make the right side of the heart do all the work and allow the child to live a healthy and happy life.

Mason spent his first 103 days at the University of Minnesota Children's hospital with much of his time in the Pediatric Cardiovascular ICU. He had the first of the three open-heart surgeries required when he was 3 months old.  The surgery lasted approximately 9 hours.   He recovered from the surgery and aside from two much shorter hospital stays was able to be home with his dad, mom and sister until his next surgery, the Glenn.  He had great doctors, nurses, and other staff for his long stay at the U of M Children's hospital.

Mason had the Glenn heart surgery at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis in April of 2018.  He had great doctors and nurses at Children’s and medical staff from the U of M hospital stayed involved with his care.  Sadly, after 101 days in the hospital and numerous complications, Mason passed away in July.

We have created a team to run in memory of sweet Mason who was a tough little boy who endured so much in his short life and is missed by so many.  By running the Goldy's run and fundraising for the U of M Children’s hospital and clinics, we hope to raise money to allow for additional research of HLHS and other congenital heart defects.   Thank you for considering a donation to this great cause!
