Running for my Papa. In Loving Memory of Moosa Jiwaji (1949–2025)

On April 21, 2025, I lost my dad, Moosa Jiwaji, to lung cancer. He was 75, a husband, father, grandfather, lawyer, mentor, and friend to so many. But to me, he was simply Papa, my biggest cheerleader, my voice of reason, and the one who always believed I could do hard things.

My dad was a girl dad in every sense of the word. He encouraged his daughters to dream boldly, speak up, and carve our own paths, never shrinking from challenge or conviction. He lived by example: leading with kindness, curiosity, and courage. Whether in the courtroom, the classroom, or our living room, he taught us that integrity matters and that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Born in Mombasa, Kenya, and building a life in Canada, my dad’s journey was one of perseverance, purpose, and service. His work as a lawyer, mediator, and human rights commissioner reflected his lifelong belief in fairness and compassion. Even while pursuing his Master of Laws later in life, he reminded us that growth doesn’t stop with age, that every day is an opportunity to understand and give back a little more.

As I run this marathon, I carry his lessons and his spirit with me every step of the way. The kilometres ahead are for him: for his strength, his humour, and his unwavering faith in his daughters.

This run is also for everyone still fighting, and for the families who, like ours, have felt the heartbreak of cancer. Your donation will go directly to Cancer Research, helping fund the breakthroughs and treatments that bring hope to countless others.
