My Story…
I am walking this year on behalf of two of the Refugee Families we are hoping to sponsor. To move forward, we need to join a waiting list for spots from the federal government, and to raise funds and identify volunteers to help them to resettle once in Canada.
One is Zahra's family, who are Hazara from Afghanistan. Zahra is living in Toronto studying Health Information Management at George Brown College and working at L'Arche. Her family of 4 fled Afghanistan after her sister survived a bombing attack and her brother was severely beaten. They now are mostly living in fear and hiding in Tajikistan, and hoping to come to Canada. Her brother has been severely beaten in Tajikistan as well, and police demanded a large bribe.
The other is Nasser and Mansour's brother's family of 4: their brother, his spouse, and twins who are both 14. They fled from Iran due to discrimination (they are Kurds), and made it to Turkey in 2014. The Kurdish people are terribly repressed in Turkey, as well, and they have been living under assumed names, working under the table, unable to have their children attend school. They have suffered many years of having their cultural and language rights suppressed. They also would like to come to Canada.
If we are unable to proceed with these two families (we believe we will be able to), there are many other refugees turning to us for help.
