My Story…
Growing up in Vancouver I have fond memories of hanging around the Downtown Eastside area. My mom worked at the HSBC in Chinatown (now RBC).
It was her first professional job after busting her butt waiting tables 7 days a week at Chinese and Japanese restaurants (Hon's on Robson and Daimasu in old station square by Metrotown). That's all on TOP of going to night school for ESL and adult school credits.
I remember going to pick up produce, groceries and this like $2 rice noodle place. Oh and does anyone remember the produce grandmas that left out there veggies on newspapers?
It's been a shame to see that entire vitality of that neighborhood fade throughout my youth and adult years in this city.
Now I work in the Gastown area and I really believe the Downtown Eastside is going through a renaissance right now. There's so many cool bars, restaurants, speakeasies, markets, and a beautiful melange of old and new... east and west.
I really believe the work that PHS Community Services does has been one of those pillars in our community to give support, integrity to at risk individuals of homelessness in our communities.
So when Kelly Nichol and I spoke at a Vancouver Board of Trade event, I was STOKED at the opportunity to be able to take part in helping fundraise for them for the 2025 Under Armour Eastside 10k.
If you do have a giving budget I hope you can consider giving and support this cause <3
