Our story…
Marathon for Myroulla.
Far too many of our family and friends fall victim to cancer. It is one of the scariest diagnoses you can hear from your doctor. As an ER doc, I have had to deliver the devastating news over and over again to patients who hoped their symptoms were caused by absolutely anything else.
My mom, Myroulla, was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30's and barely made it to 40 years old. She is only one of many family and friends that have suffered and died way too young.
Help create a world with less cancer. The more we know the better off we will be. Awareness leads to earlier detection and research provides us with better treatments.
My mom's struggle and outcome could have been better with more awareness. Maybe if I knew then what I know now, she would have been able to better understand the disease and the options.
I am certain that she would have a better chance to beat it today than in 1985 because of advancements by research scientists and cancer doctors. Ultimately cancer treatment is still hard and she may have still lost the battle. But consider where we would be now if we stopped all research in 1985? We need to support and prioritize research and advancements that can help humanity.
You can make a difference. Get screened. Talk to your family and friends. Support work towards prevention and treatment. Thank you to the AACR Runners for Research at the 2025 Philadelphia Marathon Weekend.
Happy Running,
–Basil
