FAQ's
Can I race with more than one dog at the same time?
We offer the two dog 5k and 10k that race allows you to run with two dogs!
Participants in the 5k fun run and virtual race can have more than one dog.
How will the race begin?
The race start will see up to 6 teams at a time leave in intervals until all group racers are out in the course. Intervals will be exactly two minutes apart. Your specific start interval will be called out over loud speaker and the starting positions will be posted. Please ensure that you and your dog(s) are in the starting chute immediately after the preceding interval has departed. Each team in the chute will be 8 feet apart. Teams in each wave will be placed based on their registration answer to the question of "estimated 5k or 10k finish time".
How will the Race be timed?
The race will be manually timed. You must have your BIB clearly displayed on the front of your torso so our timers can see it.
Where do I pick up my race kit?
Your race kit will be ready for pick up on race day at the check in table - look for the "BIB PICK UP" sign.
Do I need canicross equipment?
Canicross equiment is required to particapte in the race categories. This includes a canicross dog harness (allows for non-restricted motion for dogs to run, there are various styles, please feel free to contact us if you are unsure), a tether line that has an elastic component to it (~4-6 feet long), and a canicross belt that allows the runner to be hands free. Please note that EQUIPMENT WILL BE INSPECTED AT CHECK IN. If your equipment does not fit the above criteria you will be asked to enter into the FUN RUN if you cannot secure proper equipment prior to the race starting.
The FUN RUN allows for leash and collar or any other type of equipment suitable for running with dogs. All dogs must be on a lead at all times.
We recommend that you bring ice cleats for your shoes so you are prepared for the possibility of icy spots on the trails.
What does it mean if I see a dog owner with a yellow pinnie on?
Yellow pinnies indicate that teams require and would like more than the mandatory 8 feet of distance from other dogs and people while at the race, please be aware of each teams space requirements and make sure to ask if it is ok to approach another team.
Trail Etiquette - How do I pass another team and what do I do if I'm being passed?
If you and your awesome fast dog are going to pass another team, alert them by verbally telling them that you are passing them and what side you will be passing them on "passing on your right" for example.
If you are being passed and you think that your dog might react or interfere with the overtaking team, pull over to the side and reel in your dog to your side while the other team passes. Once it is clear and safe to do so, HIKE UP! and get back in the race!
After the race
Island Lake Conservation Area boasts over 800 acres of nature to explore. At the time of the Snowy Paw the outdoor skating rink should be up and running and all trails should be accessible to explore on your own after the race is over, maybe bring your snow shoes? Take some time to enjoy one of the most popular outdoor spaces in Dufferin County.
Canicross Event Etiquette and Expectations
*Please note that the race day schedule may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances*
Every handler is responsible for their dog. If your dog is aggressive, you may want to reconsider joining the event, if you choose to come to the event it's in everyone's best interest that you use a muzzle. Race officials reserve the right to remove aggressive dogs from the event for safety reasons on a case by case basis.
If participating in the 5k or 10k race, your dog MUST be out in front pulling you, your dog cannot be behind you. It is acceptable to have your dog by your side if they are tired, unsure, or anxious. However in the spirit of canicross please encourage your dog to be out front pulling.
Ensure you allow your dog an opportunity to do their business prior to the race. Each handler is responsible for picking up after their dog, waste bins will be available.
If your dog poops on the course, you must pick it up. There will be a waste bin at the aid station.
