This year, our team — Rainbow Chasers and Cheeto Racers — is proud and humbled to run the Akron Marathon Relay in honor of a little girl who continues to inspire us every single day: Melina Michelle Edenfield.

On May 22, 2020, the Edenfield family received the unimaginable news that their youngest daughter, Melina, had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive pediatric brain tumor known as Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG). Just over a month later, on June 24, Melina passed away — only four years old, but already a force of nature.

To know Melina was to love her. She was joyful, fierce, and full of sparkle — a cheetah-print-loving, giraffe-obsessed, Starbucks Frappuccino-sipping girl who lived every day with heart and laughter. She adored her big sisters, Emilea and Klara, and tackled life with a competitive spirit and a brilliant mind. Even in her illness, Melina taught us the importance of choosing joy — a message she lived and shared, even in the most difficult moments.

We chose our team name — Rainbow Chasers and Cheeto Racers — to reflect Melina’s vibrant personality and the little things she loved most. Rainbows and Cheetos might seem simple, but they remind us of the beauty, silliness, and color she brought into our lives.

We run in honor of Melina, and we run to support the Melina Michelle Edenfield Foundation, which is working to raise awareness and fund research to find a cure for DMG and DIPG pediatric brain tumors. Melina was her family’s miracle — and now, through this foundation and your support, she has the power to be a miracle for so many more.

We carry her spirit with every mile, every step, every stride.
