Choose to #OptOutside on Black Friday! Enjoy an outdoor experience with family and friends (new and old!) along the lovely C&D Canal, creating memories that last a lifetime, rather than shopping-til-you-drop for gifts that all too quickly end up in the landfill. The Black Friday Run/Walk aligns with Plastic Free Delaware’s (aka Zero Waste First State) mission to reduce single-use plastic pollution in our communities and watersheds and cultivate a “zero waste” culture where Reduce, Repair, and Reuse are emphasized even before Recycle – striving for a circular economy and sustainable use of materials and resources. Black Friday event swag and awards will all be eco-friendly.

WHY
“Opt outside” with us on Black Friday and be together with family and friends (new and old!) for a fun, outdoor activity during the long holiday weekend, all while supporting a good cause!
Founded in 2010, Plastic Free Delaware (aka Zero Waste First State) is a statewide nonprofit organization focused on making Delaware’s communities and waterways cleaner and healthier by reducing the use of single-use plastic and encouraging zero waste practices. With the help of our tireless volunteer corps, we provide educational programs and undertake advocacy for policy changes at the federal, state level and local levels. In 2019, PFD founded YES!, the Delaware Youth Environmental Summit, for high school students. The 2024 YES! was attended by 500+ students from more than 30 high schools. In 2022, with 25% of our landfill waste composed of organic food waste, PFD launched the Delaware Community Composting Initiative to reduce food waste and encourage organics composting. Your participation in the Black Friday 5K helps PFD expand its educational reach with these and other programs, and helps keep Delaware’s schools, watersheds, and communities clean and healthy.
Unsurprisingly, the Black Friday 5k aims to be a GREEN & sustainable event
- Organics (think: banana peels and orange rinds) will be collected & composted, and recyclables (beverage containers) will be recycled
- Please bring your own reusable, refillable water bottles for pre- and post- race hydration. Refill stations are provided
- All swag and awards will be eco-friendly.
