My Story…
My name is Brandi Marley, and I was born with Neurofibromatosis (NF1). I was diagnosed at the age of two. My parents had never heard of NF before I was diagnosed. They took me to the doctor after noticing a few brown spots I had on my body that did not appear normal. The doctors told them they are called café-au-lait spots which is one of the signs of having NF. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. This progressive disorder affects all races, all ethnic groups and both sexes equally. NF is one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States (one in every 3,000 to 4,000 births). Approximately 50% of those affected with Neurofibromatosis have a prior family history of NF. The other 50% of cases are the result of spontaneous genetic mutation.
