My Story…
For the 7th consecutive year, I have the honor of running the Falmouth Road Race for Live4Evan.
We’ve always been passionate about their mission—providing housing for families whose children are receiving cardiac care at Boston Children’s Hospital. But when we started running for them seven years ago, we couldn’t have known just how personal this cause would become.
Just over two years ago, when I was 30 weeks pregnant with Jordyn, we learned that her heart had gone into an unsafe rhythm: supraventricular tachycardia. The galloping sound of her heartbeat still echoes in my memory. With medication, we were able to stabilize her, and I was able to carry her to 39 weeks for induction.
Once she was born, Jordyn’s medical journey continued. At just seven weeks old, she developed septic arthritis in her foot. The exceptional care we received at Boston Children’s during that time led us to transition all of her care there. To date, Jordyn has seen more than seven specialists through BCH, and the care has been nothing short of remarkable.
Every time we make the drive to Longwood, I think of Live4Evan and the families they serve. Whenever I find myself frustrated by traffic or midday appointments, I remind myself how fortunate we are. We’ve never had a hospital stay extend beyond a week. We’ve never had to make the painful drive back and forth every day while our child remains inpatient for months. We haven’t had to cross the country to access the world-class care that happens to be in our backyard.
But for many families, this is their reality.
Three months ago, a young girl very dear to me was admitted to the CICU at BCH after complications from the flu virus. I’ve visited her and her family there several times. Each time I walk into that unit, the air is filled with hope—but also the unmistakable buzz of constant urgency. The beds are always full. And unfortunately, so is the patient family housing.
This is why Live4Evan matters. A comfortable bed. Relief from the crushing financial burden. The ability to be close to your child during their most critical moments. These things are invaluable—and so deeply needed.
Please consider supporting my run by making a donation to Live4Evan. Together, we can ensure that more families have a place to rest their heads, hold onto hope, and be by their child’s side when it matters most.
Description
ABOUT US: The Live4Evan Organization was formed out of a desire to recognize and support the critical relationship between a child and their loved ones. We believe that there is no greater gift to be given than a parent’s love to a child. We understand the importance of staying by a child’s side without having to worry about the additional burdens that life can place on us. And so, our organization works tirelessly to provide financial and emotional support to families by providing them with temporary housing while their child receives congenital cardiac treatment.
The Falmouth Road Race has been a crucial fundraiser for Live4Evan for the past 7 years. Over this time, the Live4Evan team members have collectively raised over $620,000. Thanks in large part to these efforts, Live4Evan is currently providing SEVEN patient-family apartments for families traveling to Boston for pediatric cardiac care. These apartments are next to Boston Children's Hospital and offer calm and comfort in the midst of such a difficult time. The close proximity to the hospital ensures that caretakers can be at their loved ones bedside in a moment's notice. The need for patient-family housing is critical and Live4Evan is committed to increasing our apartment portfolio in order to help additional families.
OUR STORY: Live4Evan was founded in memory of Evan Girardi, who passed away his senior year of college from a heart arrhythmia. Evan was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) known as Corrected L-Transposition of the Great Arteries. Despite his heart condition, Evan lived his life to the fullest. Rather than allow Evan’s passing to put an end to the life and legacy that Evan had built, his friends and family formed Live4Evan to serve as a testament to the power of relationships and the importance of having loved ones by your side.
