Why I'm running in support of AAFA New England
Hello Family & Friends,
I am excited to be running the Falmouth Road Race in support of the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter (AAFANE) in August.
Why AAFANE?
In February, 2018, my son suffered an anaphylactic reaction at a restaurant in MA after being served an item with peanuts, despite telling our server of his food allergy to peanuts. For close to 7 years, I advocated alongside the incredible team at AAFNE to make dining out in MA safer for those living with food allergies. Our ask was consistent and simple; could we please update the outdated guidance around food allergy training and ensure "the person in charge" who is trained in food allergy awareness be on duty at all times?
In September, 2024, everything we had been working on and hoping for was achieved when The MA Department of Public Health (DPH) updated the Retail Food Code Standards for Allergen Awareness. The Allergen Awareness Training Protocol updated the almost 15 year old training video with an accredited version and ensures the food allergy training video meet accreditation standards and be reviewed and/or updated every 5 years, the Top 9 Allergens must be posted, and the Person In Charge (with FA training) must be on site at all times during hours of operation.
AAFANE has been instrumental in this process since the beginning. My family and I appreciate everything AAFANE has done for us and I would love to have your support for them. AAFANE advocates for everyone in New England who struggles with the daily challenges of living with food allergies and asthma. Would you please help AAFANE continue its mission by making a donation?
Thank you,
Nicole
