Why I'm running for Mothers' Milk Bank Northeast

Hello! It's that time of year again - I'm lacing up my running shoes for the Falmouth Road Race. This year will be my 14th year running and I'm so proud to be running in support of Mother's Milk Bank Northeast, a nonprofit that provides life-saving donor milk to babies in neonatal intensive care units and hospitals across 11 states in the North East. For very low birth weight preterm infants, human milk is the safest food source for them. An exclusive human milk diet helps prevent some of the most fatal complications, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Donor milk is increasingly used as a “bridge to breastfeeding.” When used as a supplement instead of formula, donor milk can lead to better breastfeeding outcomes. This results in significant health benefits for both mothers and babies.

This nonprofit means so much to me. My son Declan was born at 3lb 4oz and spent a month in the NICU with an ng tube for feeding. While in the NICU in Boston, we learned about donor milk, why it is so critical and truly magic for these preemie miracles! We luckily had a successful 16 month breastfeeding  journey and ultimately were able to donate over 150 oz to the Mothers Milk Bank NE to help fragile babies like Declan.

I believe all babies should have a fighting chance to grow and thrive and the Mother’s Milk Bank NE helps make that possible. Any donation is truly appreciated!

Thank you!

Description

Funds raised for Mothers' Milk Bank Northeast help to provide 1.5 million feedings annually for fragile infants.

“TyQuell weighed just 1 lb., 11 oz when he was born – a number so tiny it was terrifying. He spent eight months and five days fighting for his life in that NICU. During those first few weeks (when I avoided finishing the nursery because I didn’t know if he’d be coming home) he was fortunate enough to receive donor milk . . . Doctors told me it would be beneficial, that it would help him grow. Knowing my son had the nutrition he needed gave me comfort. I was so thankful for that gift and still am.” ~ Sherita, TyQuell’s Mom
