Save Popponesset Bay (SPB) is thrilled to make its debut in the 2025 Falmouth Road Race! Our dedicated team of runners is eager to train together and raise funds for a vital cause: preserving the pristine beauty and ecological balance of Popponesset Bay for future generations.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, SPB is committed to conserving the Popponesset Bay ecosystem, including the Popponesset Spit shoreline and surrounding waterways that properly flush the Bay to maintain water quality in the area. The Popponesset Spit barrier beach is a protected species habitat that allows for Federally protected Piping Plovers and Terns to flourish.
The funds raised through the 2025 Falmouth Road Race will directly support SPB's ambitious "Longer, Wider, Deeper Project." This initiative aims to dredge local waterways and deposit 70,000 cubic yards of sand onto Popponesset Spit. The project will yield multiple benefits:
- Enhanced navigability of channels
- Increased resilience of the Spit barrier beach against future weather events
- Improved recreation in the nature preserve
