My Story…
As many of you know, I recently became a below-the-knee bilateral amputee and have been working hard to get back on my feet. Through this process, I came across the Bionic Project. This organization works with schools to teach students how to interact with disabilities, normalize them, and embrace them. The program includes education on inclusive language and behavior, assistive technology and designs, and interaction with athletes with disabilities. The project brings me so much joy and hope because...
My wife and I have two kids, ages 8 and 5, and I am incredibly proud of them for how they navigated this past year. From holding my hands and telling me how much they love me when I was intubated in the hospital—with my heart, kidney, and lungs failing and given 36 hours to live due to sepsis caused by Strep A—to holding my hands as I took my first steps with my prostheses, which they call my “robot legs.” They have faced so much. For them, school has been both a haven and a struggle as they encounter questions about my amputations from classmates at school events and my disability being a topic that teachers have to support in the classroom.
The Bionic Project's work with schools is invaluable in building a more inclusive and understanding future. Physical disability is not something to fear; it’s just another limitation, and we all have limitations that we work to overcome. I am excited to be able participate in this race.
