My Story…
It’s been 4 years since my mom passed from dementia related symptoms at 60 years old. Dementia is a cruel and unrelenting disease; it rips away the person you know and love well before their heart stops. It leaves families in shambles. Not only have I watched my mom go through it, but also both my grandmothers. A lot of people think of dementia as something that happens as we age but that is NOT how it should be. And it doesn’t always happen at an older age, as I started seeing symptoms in my mom in her mid 50s. To say that I’m afraid for my own future is an understatement. Watching this disease in action is part of the reason I try my best to have a clean diet and run several times a week. But is that enough with my family history? More research needs to be done urgently to find a way to prevent this horrible illness, as baby boomers age we will have millions more people living with dementia. Not only will people be stripped of their futures but caregivers will be stretched to the brim as well. That’s why, when I decided to sign up for a marathon, I wanted to run for the Alzheimer’s association. I started running when I was 14, and I never could have imagined at 27 that I would have 6 half marathons under my belt with another coming up in March. As an anxious person, running means so much to me, and I can’t imagine my life without it. While halfs seem to be my favorite distance, I’ve always wanted to run a full marathon to prove to myself what I’m capable of. I’m not racing for any specific time, just to finish, and running for dementia research and to be able to tell Finley that her mom ran a marathon will be my driving factors. Please consider donating, it would mean a lot to me ❤️
