Spinal Cord Injury Alberta

Spinal Cord Injury Alberta (SCI-AB), formerly the Canadian Paraplegic Association Alberta, is dedicated to supporting individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and other physical disabilities in achieving independence and full community participation. 

Since 1961, SCI-AB has prioritized peer mentorship and meaningful connection, recognizing their vital role in enhancing independence and fostering community integration following an injury.

SCI-AB delivers a comprehensive range of services that support individuals throughout their recovery and life journey, beginning during inpatient rehabilitation. Peer Coordinators, who have lived experience with SCI, provide mentorship, guidance, and empathy to newly injured individuals and their families. Client Service Coordinators offer personalized case management, assisting clients in navigating life after injury while setting and working toward goals related to healthcare, housing, employment, active living, and self-advocacy.

SCI-AB also provides access to the Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre in Calgary, where clients work with Clinical Exercise Physiologists to achieve functional goals. The organization’s community development initiatives promote inclusion, advocacy, and awareness of SCI-related issues. In addition, SCI-AB shares current information on SCI research, resources, and opportunities to empower individuals and strengthen communities.

Through these comprehensive services, SCI-AB continues to fulfill its mission of empowering individuals with SCI to lead independent, fulfilling lives by ensuring they have the resources, support, and connections needed to thrive.
