My Story…
My name is Tyla, I’m 21 years old and from Perth, Western Australia.
I have always felt a deep responsibility to stand up for my community and support those around me. Through my various roles with AUJS (Australasian Union of Jewish Students), I have the privilege of working with Jewish students and young people across Australia, helping strengthen Jewish connection, identity, and community. Being part of this community has shown me the importance of standing up, speaking out, and showing up for one another, especially during the moments when our community needs it most.
When the Bondi terrorist attack occurred on 14 December 2025 and the lives of 15 innocent people were taken, including 10 year old Matilda Bee, it deeply affected me. As a young Jewish Australian, it was heartbreaking to see such hatred and antisemitism impact innocent lives, families, and a community that I am so proud to be part of.
The attack was a painful wake up call. For over two years, Jewish Australians have been speaking about the rise in antisemitism, the fear many in our community have felt, and the need for these concerns to be taken seriously. Seeing this hatred result in the loss of innocent lives was devastating and reinforced why it is so important that we continue to stand together and speak up.
I never had the privilege of knowing Matilda personally, but her life has touched people across Australia and beyond. When I heard her story, I felt a responsibility to turn my heartbreak into action. What was intended to spread fear and hate can be met with something far stronger: kindness, unity, and standing proudly together.
I am running the 12km City2Surf in Perth in Matilda’s memory and to support the beautiful legacy her family is building through MatildaBee.org. MatildaBee.org is about keeping Matilda’s memory alive by spreading kindness, bringing joy to others, and creating positive moments in her name.
This run is my way of saying that Matilda will not be remembered only for the tragedy that took her life. She will be remembered for the kindness, love, and light that she continues to inspire.
By supporting this fundraiser, you are helping honour Matilda’s memory, grow her legacy, and stand against the hatred that took so much from so many. Together, we can choose kindness over hate and continue spreading the light that Matilda represents.
