My Story…
I am walking BUMRUN 2026 to:
- increase awareness of colorectal cancer screening, especially screening at an age much lower than the screening age of 50 years old. One of the initiatives of the Colorectal Cancer Resource & Action Network (CCRAN) has been to lower the screening age to 45 (to be in line with other jurisdictions). On May 4, 2026, it was announced that Ontario is lowering the colorectal cancer screening age for average-risk Canadians from 50 to 45, effective July 1, 2026. This is a landmark moment for cancer prevention — and a victory that CCRAN has been working towards since 2020! If you’re eligible for screening, don’t delay it!
- share information on colorectal cancer symptoms and to encourage self-advocacy including in the early onset population (people under 50). People as young as 30 are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Regardless of your age, it is important to act quickly on symptoms you are experiencing and advocate for yourself. CCRAN’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness Toolkit (see link below) provides information on colorectal cancer symptoms to look out for, including when to reach out to your doctor. If you’re experiencing symptoms, advocate for early screening!
- promote CCRAN and its role in advocating for colorectal cancer patients in Canada. In addition to advocating for a lower screening age in Canada, CCRAN’s patient-focused activities also include: (i) providing evidence-based programming to help guide informed decision-making that may ultimately reduce the burden of cancer in Canada; and (ii) advocating for equal and timely access to effective therapies in Canada to improve cancer patient outcomes by making Health Technology Assessment (HTA) patient evidence submissions to the Canadian government. See: https://www.ccran.org for more information.
Colorectal cancer awareness and early screening is key - with early diagnosis, colorectal cancer is highly treatable!
My hope is that this message inspires and empowers people to take that first step towards screening, to start a conversation with their doctors, and to share knowledge with family and friends.
Please help me support this worthy cause!
