My Story
Thanks for visiting my Grandma's Marathon fundraising page! This June, I'll be running Grandma's Marathon on behalf of Save the Boundary Waters! Running a marathon has been a goal of mine for years, and I'm ready to make it a reality. Please read more about why I've chosen to raise money for Save the Boundary Waters below, and help in accomplishing my goal of raising $1000 for this organization!
A few years ago, I experienced the serene, natural beauty of the Boundary Waters, canoeing from site to site, swimming and fishing in the pristine waters. We paddled to areas that felt untouched by others, and caught and fried our dinner over the fire that night. At one point, an eagle swooped alongside our canoe to catch his dinner. The only sound was the swoosh of a paddle in the water.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Northeastern Minnesota is the most visited Wilderness in the United States. Copper mining threatens Minnesota’s environment, local economy, and way of life. This risky type of mining, adjacent to and upstream of the Boundary Waters and would harm the interconnected lakes, streams, rivers, and forests. Copper mining is one of the most toxic industries in America, and the construction of such a mine would have disastrous implications on wildlife, clean water, and the global climate.
The Boundary Waters is home to some of Minnesota’s most iconic lakes and cleanest water, but a risky copper mine threatens the area. Save the Boundary Waters is leading the effort to protect this wilderness. I am asking for your support in keeping these midwestern waters clean, safe, and wild.
Please consider donating to help me reach my goal of $1000 to Save the Boundary Waters. Anything helps in achieving this. Thank you in advance!
Description
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is an undeveloped 1.1 million-acre federal and state-recognized Wilderness Area. It is an expanse of lakes, rivers, and forests in the Superior National Forest, located along the Minnesota-Canada border, that has been protected by statute and international treaty for more than a century. This is the sixth most critical region in the lower 48 to protect for climate resiliency and contains 20% of all the freshwater in the entire National Forest System. The water in the Boundary Waters is so clean, you can dip your cup and drink straight from the lake.
Save the Boundary Waters is the locally-based, national campaign led by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness based in Ely, Minnesota dedicated to permanently protecting America’s most beloved Wilderness Area – the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
