Soggy Bottom Cardboard Box Boat Regatta and Family Fun Day brings together fun loving, energetic, competitive, young people and even grown-ups, families, clubs, work groups and business people at the Cataract Gorge.
Anyone can get involved in the boat races and also help raise funds for local charities supporting young people. Get a team together (friends, family, school mates or work colleagues) then build and decorate your boat. Go one step further and even dress up on the day!
Test you boat building and paddling skills (and your luck!) competing against others in your Division. Try not to sink.
The boat and team with fastest time wins. Great prizes for race winners and fundraising champions. Novelty awards will be on offer for best decorated boat and crew.
For people not wanting to get wet, there are many other fun events on shore for all members of the family to enjoy.
Boat Building Rules:
- Do not use clear tape. All tape must be coloured so it can be seen and retrieved from the pool. We also want it to be removed from the cardboard so it can be composted after the event.
- Construct your boat with only cardboard boxes / tubes and tape.
- Use tape only for structural purposes such as seams or stress points.
- Don't use water proofing aids such as coated or waxed cardboard, paint or glue, or lots of tape.
- Don’t use metal fasteners such as screws, bolts, washers, staples.
- Be creative - enhance your fantastic boat design with colourful decorations using small amounts of tape, paint etc.
Race Day Rules:
- Registration essential - check website for details
- Each person with their boat must wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Some PFD’s will be available for loan on the day.
- Respect other teams and their boats — both off and on the water.
- No purposeful sinking of other teams boats.
- Have fun!
