My Story…
Running for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness
Over the past couple of months, I’ve walked alongside my father as he’s gone through investigations and treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Thankfully, in his case, the cancer was caught at an early stage, and he was able to undergo successful surgery to resect the tumour.
We know how fortunate we are.
Unfortunately, many families facing pancreatic cancer don’t have that same outcome. Too often, pancreatic cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, when treatment options are more limited.
That’s why I’ve chosen Pancreatic Cancer North America as my fundraising charity for the upcoming Constantine Yorkville 5K.
Our goal is to raise $2,500 for Pancreatic Cancer North America.
Pancreatic cancer has long been considered a rare type of cancer, but one of the hardest to treat. Thanks to advances in medicine, early treatments and targeted therapies the 5 year survival rate has increased to 13% in North America as compared with 2-3% a few decades ago.
It often is not caught until it has metastasized (spread to other organs), making treatment much more difficult.
While advancements are slow, organizations like Pancreatic Cancer North America are working towards more targeted therapies, earlier detection and ultimately better patient outcomes.
This foundation is dedicated towards improving early detection and moving from sympathy to survival. As this cancer is often caught in the late stages, they fund research for early detection when the cancer is still resectable to help improve survival rates.
A Personal Challenge For an Amazing Cause
I'm excited to participate in the Constantine Yorkville 5K race, and I'm also setting a personal goal!
My current 5K personal best is 19:55, and I'm going to challenge myself to run a new personal best on race day. It will be a mental and physical challenge, but one that I'm excited to take on for a cause that has become very personal to me.
I’m so grateful to combine my passion for gastroenterology, health and fitness while also supporting a great cause!
