Our Story

Sophie's journey with cancer began eight years ago, when she was just three and a half years old. Since that day, her life has been defined by unimaginable challenges—pain, endless treatments, and procedures that would test even the strongest adults. Yet, through it all, Sophie has shown extraordinary courage, resilience, and hope.

The True Cost of Childhood Cancer

The greatest cost of this journey has not been measured in medical bills or lost sleep, but in the precious moments of childhood that Sophie has missed. She has rarely attended school, struggled to make friends, and missed out on the simple joys of being a kid. While most children her age are discovering the world, Sophie has been fighting to survive it.

A Particularly Difficult Year

2025 has been especially cruel. What began as a slight pain in Sophie's back quickly escalated into excruciating agony, requiring morphine to manage. Scans revealed aggressive tumor growth around her spine, neck, and chest—shattering her dreams of visiting Disneyland and exploring the world of Harry Potter in California. Instead of laughter and adventure, Sophie faced eight grueling rounds of chemotherapy and countless blood and platelet transfusions. She was able to attend a full day of school only four times this year.

A Beacon of Hope: Campfire Circle

In the darkest moments, Campfire Circle has been a lifeline for Sophie. Their dedicated staff and volunteers have brought joy, laughter, and hope when she needed it most. Camp is Sophie's favorite thing in the world—a place where, for a brief time, she can simply be a kid. Even when she couldn't attend camp, Campfire Circle found ways to lift her spirits and remind her that she is not alone.

Why We Need Your Help

Sophie's future is uncertain. We do not know how long the chemotherapy will work or what the next scan will bring. But we do know this: on Mother's Day 2026, we will be running for Campfire Circle, to give hope to Sophie and other children like her.

We can't do this alone. We need your support.

Description

Bring Joy, Friendship, and Connection to Kids Who Need It Most

Every day, thousands of kids across Ontario face cancer or serious illness – and miss out on the moments that make up childhood. Laughter, friendship, and adventure are replaced with hospital visits and isolation.

For 42 years, Campfire Circle (formerly Camp Ooch & Camp Trillium) has brought healing through happiness to kids with cancer or serious illness and their families. Through our in-hospital, community, and overnight camp programs, we create opportunities for children to build friendships and social skills, develop self-confidence and resiliency, and improve their overall well-being. By providing play-based experiences, we empower kids to take back their childhood, regardless of their medical diagnosis.

But today, more than 40,000 children in Ontario are living with serious illnesses. With your help, we can reach even more of them.

Our goal is to serve 10,000 kids by 2030, and when you donate to the Sporting Life 10K, you join a circle committed to that vision. Your generosity ensures every medically fragile child can experience Campfire Circle’s life-changing programs when they need it most, at no cost to their families.

Together, we can grow our circle of care and help deliver healing through happiness to more kids and families across Ontario.
