My Story…

Hi! I'm Heidi—a mother, wife, runner, EMT, Certified Flight Communicator, and a Communications Specialist for Boston MedFlight for the last 10 years.

It’s not a career that’s easy to put into words, but it is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding things I’ve ever had the pleasure of doing. The comms center has been described as the “conductor of the orchestra.” It’s a behind-the-scenes role that plays a vital part in every transport.

A communications specialist receives the call, assigns a helicopter, confirms all logistics for the sending and receiving landing zones, coordinates with the receiving trauma center, and ensures that the medical crew and pilot have all pertinent information prior to arriving at the patient’s side.

Having such an intimate role in the most vulnerable moments of someone’s life forces you to reflect on yourself often. Ensuring that I maintain a healthy lifestyle has become very important to me.

I started running in 2021 because of a challenge from my sister: if I ran a half marathon, she would come to Disney with me. Five years later, I’ve logged countless miles, become a five-time half marathoner, lowered my blood pressure medication, and lost 60 pounds.

Merging my passion for helping people with running is a win-win.

Boston MedFlight is a nonprofit organization that provides critical care transport to patients in the Northeast via helicopter and ambulance, regardless of their ability to pay. This means our teams act as a mobile ICU, transporting patients from community hospitals, remote locations, and scene calls to tertiary care centers.

It’s not something you think about until you need it—and I assure you, if that moment comes in your life, you’ll be grateful for the incredibly skilled providers I’m honored to work alongside, helping move you or your loved one from point A to point B.

If you’re able, please consider donating.

Thank you for reading this, and for your continued support of my running journey.

—Heidi
