My Story…
This August, I will be running the Falmouth Road Race in memory of my dad, Michael. My dad unexpectedly passed away on Christmas morning of 2013. I was just 11 years old. Anyone who knew my dad would probably agree that there was no one more than he loved than my younger brother and I which is why this is much more than a race to me. I remember being in middle school and feeling like the only kid that could possibly know what it means to lose a parent at such a young age.
For me, the only thing that got me through middle and high school was the connection with other kids like me that I met along the way. During my freshman year of college, I found a grief group on campus that served as a catalyst for me feeling comfortable sharing stories about my dad and finding some of my best friends. Human connection and mentorship is critical for children experiencing a significant loss and the resources at Empower ensure no child grieves alone.
Running reminds me that when it feels hard or impossible, you can dig deep and find strength, positivity and happiness, similar to grieving and remembering my dad.

Join me in supporting Empower by helping me raise money as I take on the 2026 Falmouth Road Race!
Empower is a nonprofit with a very specific mission — to empower, support, and connect children and young adults (up through age 24) who have experienced the loss of a parent. Empower provides events that remind children they are not alone in their grief, and a unique one-on-one mentor program with positive role models from the community who help teach, “loss is survivable.”
Cara was nine years old when her mother Kit died of breast cancer and formed Empower as a grassroots movement out of the gratitude she had for all the layers of support her family received growing up. Empower operates with a lean staff and thousands of volunteers from across the globe and all programs remain at no charge to the family.
