This year, I'm running the Falmouth Road Race to raise funds for Good Shepherd Community Care, which provides palliative, hospice, and bereavement support to patients and families facing serious illness.

Following my mother's decline and passing, I became more aware of how little we talk about serious illness, caregiving, grief, and particularly end-of-life care. These experiences touch every family at some point, yet they’re often conversations we don’t have until we must. Through my own experience, I came to appreciate the importance of compassionate support for both patients and their loved ones– and how valuable organizations like Good Shepherd Community Care are in helping people navigate them.

As I looked for ways to support people navigating these challenges, I discovered Good Shepherd Community Care and was deeply impressed by the range of services they provide to patients and families.

Good Shepherd's care extends far beyond medical needs. Their teams include visiting nurses, social workers, spiritual care coordinators, bereavement specialists, volunteers, massage therapists, and Reiki practitioners. They also offer music and art therapy programs for pediatric palliative and hospice patients. Most importantly, they meet people where they are—whether that's at home, in assisted living, or in a nursing facility.

What stands out to me is their commitment not only to patients, but also to the people who love them. Good Shepherd continues to provide bereavement support to families for up to a year following a loss, ensuring that no one has to navigate grief alone.

 As a Reiki volunteer with Good Shepherd, I've had the opportunity to contribute to this mission in a small way. Running the Falmouth Road Race is another way for me to support an organization that helps individuals and families face some of life's most difficult moments with dignity, compassion, and care.
