Every ending carries the seed of a new beginning.

My father’s final journey marked one of the greatest losses of my life. I never imagined that, in saying goodbye to him, I would discover the work that would give my own life such meaning.

Watching the hospice team care for my father and for our entire family changed me forever. They didn’t just care for a patient; they cared for all of us. They brought comfort, dignity, guidance, and peace during one of the most difficult seasons of our lives. That experience transformed the way I understand what it means to truly care for another person. What began in loss became my purpose.

Today, I have the privilege of serving families through Good Shepherd Community Care. In many ways, I now stand where others once stood for my family, walking alongside patients and loved ones during life’s most vulnerable moments. Every conversation, every visit, and every family I meet reminds me why this work matters.

This is more than a profession. It is how I honor my father’s legacy, and how I hope to give other families the same gift that was given to mine: the reassurance that hospice is not about giving up. It is about living with dignity, finding comfort, surrounding families with compassion, and making sure no one walks this journey alone.

This August, I’ll be running the ASICS Falmouth Road Race in my father’s honor and in support of Good Shepherd Community Care. Every mile I run is a tribute to the care that changed my family’s life, and every dollar raised helps ensure that more patients and families receive the compassionate hospice and palliative care they deserve.
