My Story…

Why I'm Running – Ammar's Story 🌈

For me, this run is more than a fundraising event. It's a reminder of how much can change when people are given the chance to live openly, safely, and authentically.

As someone who was forced to leave my previous home in search of safety and the freedom to be myself, I never imagined I would one day be running proudly alongside my husband in a public celebration of queer love, community, and belonging. Growing up, my identity had to remain hidden. Being openly gay was not an option—it was something that could put my safety, freedom, and future at risk.

When I arrived in Canada, I found something I had never known before: the opportunity to simply be myself. Over time, I built a life, a career, meaningful friendships, and eventually the freedom to marry the person I love. Things that many people take for granted once felt impossible to me.

That is why Rainbow Refugee's work is so meaningful.

Around the world, countless LGBTQIA2S+ individuals continue to face persecution, violence, and discrimination because of who they are. Many are forced to leave everything behind in search of safety and the chance to live with dignity. Rainbow Refugee helps make that possible by supporting individuals as they navigate their journey toward protection, community, and a new beginning.

This year, I'm proud to once again participate in the 2026 Vancouver Pride Run & Walk with the BCP Pride Team, representing Pomerleau and standing alongside colleagues, friends, and allies who believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live without fear.

As I reflect on my own journey, I think about the importance of creating spaces where people can bring their whole selves to work, to their communities, and to their everyday lives. That spirit is reflected in the values we strive to uphold at Pomerleau—showing up authentically, supporting one another with care and respect, and adapting with courage through life's challenges and changes.

I'm running for those who are still waiting for the opportunities I now have. I'm running for those who are searching for safety, acceptance, and hope. And I'm running in gratitude for the people and organizations that help make those futures possible.

Please consider supporting Rainbow Refugee through a donation. Every contribution helps create a future where more people can live openly, love freely, and build lives filled with possibility.

With gratitude,

Ammar
