The Denim Runs are the first national race series dedicated to honoring survivors of sexual assault. During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, these runs unite communities across the country to celebrate survivor strength, foster belonging, and redefine what support and solidarity look like, one stride at a time.

Zoomies Run Club (founded by the Okamoto sisters) is partnering with the Summer Foundation to host the NYC Denim Run. More details to come!

What is Denim Day?

What is Denim Day? Denim Day, recognized on the last Wednesday of April during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, began in response to a shocking ruling by the Italian Supreme Court that overturned a rape conviction on the basis that the victim’s tight jeans implied consent. In protest, women in the Italian Parliament arrived at work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the survivor. Their act of defiance sparked a global conversation about victim blaming and the harmful myths that continue to silence survivors. Inspired by this movement, Peace Over Violence and Executive Director Patti Giggans launched Denim Day in 1999. What started as a local awareness event in Los Angeles has since grown into the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history. Denim Day urges students, businesses, community leaders, and people everywhere to wear jeans as a bold visual statement—challenging misconceptions about sexual assault and showing solidarity with survivors around the world. The Denim Runs, starting in 2026, will unite cities across the country and beyond for a month of resilience, awareness, and action. This run/walk welcomes everyone to come together in denim to amplify the voices of survivors and make strides toward change, all in denim. Why Participate? Support Survivors: Create a safe space for the community to gather, connect, and heal. Build Community: Join a welcoming, inclusive event where everyone can relax, learn, and engage. Raise Awareness: Spark important conversations about sexual violence and its impact. Have Fun: Enjoy a vibrant, uplifting atmosphere filled with joy, camaraderie, and purpose. Make a Difference: Proceeds benefit local and national organizations providing free services for survivors. Our inaugural series will kick off in these vibrant cities: Austin, Los Angeles, and New York. This is just the beginning. Over the next three years, we plan to expand our Denim Runs to additional U.S. cities and then internationally—beginning with the very city in Italy where Denim Day first originated. Whether you join us in person, run virtually from anywhere in the world, or even host a Denim Run in your own community, you’re helping fuel a global movement to challenge harmful myths, uplift survivors, and make meaningful change. *to be finalized
