My Story…
On January 20, 2006 my heart and world was shattered as my mother and I received the devastating news that my sister had suddenly passed away from an accidental substance overdose. Her first born daughter. My only sibling. She was 25, and I had just turned 20 the week prior. A short lifetime of bonded sisterhood just gone from this world, forever.
She helped soothe my childhood tears, I wore all her hand me downs, she introduced me to the coolest music, taught me how to drive, and how to stand up for myself. She was my person.
As a sophomore in college at the time, I had my entire life ahead of me. What should have been a time to garner opportunity, suddenly turned into survival mode. As a student of financial aid, I was terrified to take a semester off from school and potentially end or disrupt my access to my education. I was also still processing the loss of my father, who had suddenly passed away a mere 4 months prior.
Twenty years ago, stories like this weren't as openly talked about as they are today. This topic of conversation felt like it had to be hushed and dealt with privately in quiet. All this time, I had been waiting for an organization or foundation to bring awareness and support for families suffering the loss of loved ones from substance overdose. Last year, I was at a networking event, and I watched the Shea family get up and speak about the untimely loss of their son, and the foundation they created in his honor. They are brave and courageous people, and I felt like I was in the right place at the right time.
On April 11, 2026 I will be running the 2nd Annual Gregory's Run for Hope 5K in Scituate, MA in loving memory of my dear sister, Jennifer Waddell.
Why Gregory’s Run 4 Hope Matters
Participation directly fuels real and local impact, including:
- Community education around substance use disorder
- Resiliency Scholarships for graduating seniors impacted by loss
- Burial assistance grants for families facing sudden tragedy
- Grief support baskets and resources for newly bereaved families
- Outreach and education programs that reduce stigma and promote awareness
Thank you for taking the time to read everything above. For that I am grateful. In a way, it helps keep my sister's spirit alive. I will be running this race with a very full heart. If you would like to donate any amount to help this cause as well, I would be grateful for that. But again, simply reading my story brings me just as much gratitude.
Hug your loved ones. Tell them you love them. Live your best life.
All my love,
Amanda Waddell
