My Story…
Hi everyone! My name is Mike and I am 24 years old. To keep it brief, I have suffered with anxiety, depression and panic disorder for many years now. In the past year, I really wanted to do something to ignite change.
I have always been a person who gets my joy in helping others. That is why earlier this year, I decided to dedicate myself to running a marathon. I was able to finish the Toronto Half marathon this past may on less than 3 weeks of prep and raise close to 1000 dollars for CMHA. This brought me a tremendous amount of satisfaction, to know I am helping people just like myself.
Mentally, it was so rewarding to see what I was able to accomplish. Not only mentally, but physically this was a tremendous feat, as I suffer from degenerative disc disease. 2 years ago I was told I may eventually become paralyzed. Fast forward to now and I am doing what I never thought I could.
I specifically decided to chose the Be Fearless Run due to its partnership with the CMHA's STEPS youth program of North Vancouver. The steps program aims at connecting youth dealing with mental health issues with nature based activities. As somebody who has a passion for nature and find peace in it myself, I resonated with this program immensely. I love that I will know that this campaign will contribute to local communities. I love this idea so much that I will be flying out from Hamilton Ontario to compete in this.
The world can be a tough place sometimes but with programs like this, if I can make even a marginal impact, I am doing something right
