Volunteer
Help make the magic happen in the lead up to race day, and on race day itself. We couldn’t host an event as fantastic as the one we’re planning without the support of a dedicated community of volunteers. Volunteers receive lunch and a drink on event day, an opportunity to win some volunteer-only door prizes, an event t-shirt (provided you register by the cut-off date) and, of course, all sorts of warm fuzzies from being part of this community-driven initiative. Descriptions and approximate time commitments of each role are outlined below.
Click the REGISTER button to choose 'volunteer' as your event.
Perhaps you aren't available on race day, or plan to race yourself? We'd love your help to get set up the day before.
Course flaggers - approximate time commitment 3-6 hours
Our course flaggers are the first line of defence against racers venturing out into the Cumberland wilderness and never returning. Flaggers are required for approximately 3-6 hours each, between about 2pm and 8pm the afternoon/evening before the race. You’ll show up at Village Park with a mountain bike and a large backpack, and we’ll supply the signs, tools, and flagging materials. Flaggers will also need to do a pre-ride of part of the course with the race director in the weeks leading up to race day to familiarize yourself with the route. Race course flaggers must bring a working smartphone.
Race Central and T1 Setup - approximate time commitment 4-6 hours
On race day, Race Central will be a hub of activity, with food tents, music and . . . oh yeah, a big ol’ transition area. The real magic, though, happens the evening before. That’s when our set-up crew will meet at Village Park at approximately 12pm to help get everything set up. Once Race Central is good to go, we’ll shuffle down to Comox Lake to set up T1 as well. Don’t worry, this is a much smaller set-up! If you have a truck and are able to help us transport supplies, please let us know!
Race day roles
Volunteering for a race day role will fill your day and means you can not race - unless you want to stick around to help clean up, which we always appreciate!
Pre sweep - approximate time commitment 2-3 hours starting at 6:30am on race day
The pre-sweep heads out along the route on race morning prior to the race itself to ensure all flagging and signage is in place and alerting the team of any unexpected hazards that could impede athletes. This role works really well in conjunction with a trail marshal or first aid attendant role!
Lifeguard - approximate time commitment 7am-11am on race day
Are you a lifeguard looking to be part of a fun and fantastic event? We could use your eyes and expertise on our swim course to ensure all of our athletes are safe during the Dynamic Spine, Sport & Wellness Swim Course.
Swim course marshal - approximate time commitment 4 hours
Our swim marshals will be out on the Dynamic Spine, Sport & Wellness swim course watching over athletes as they navigate Comox Lake. Marshals must have their own kayak or stand-up paddleboard and be able to transport it to Comox Lake. Meet at the beach at Comox Lake, Cumberland side, at approximately 8:00am with your watercraft of choice. During the swim leg of the race, your duties will include monitoring swimmers and offering assistance as/if needed. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with take-down of the Dynamic Spine, Sport & Wellness swim course and/or BodyNetix transition area.
Food attendant - approximate time commitment 6 hours
Food tent attendants will set up the food tent at Village Park at approxiamtely 9am and help with other general Race Central set-up duties as needed. Throughout the day you will serve food and drinks to athletes, volunteers and sponsors. Please let us know if you are willing and able to help transport food and/or other items to the venue.
Transition (T2) attendant - approximate time commitment 8 hours
Transition area attendants will meet on race morning at approximately 6:30 am and will be stationed at the entrances/exits to the two BodyNetix transition areas. Your duties will include ensuring only registered, body-marked athletes enter the transition areas, and that their numbers correspond to the numbers on their bikes. One T2 attendant will be stationed just outside the "bike in" entrance to guide riders into transition. Volunteers may also be asked to help with take-down of one or both of the BodyNetix transition areas. You may face questions from athletes so an understanding of triathlons is an asset.
Aid station attendant - approximate time commitment 5-8 hours
Aid station attendants are out on the course making sure our aid station is stacked with refreshing water and sports drink for our thirsty athletes. It's a fun job and a great way to be out there cheering on the athletes!
Bike/run course marshal - approximate time commitment 5-8 hours
Marshals will meet at approximately 8am on race morning at Village Park, where you will be assigned a position along the Dodge City Cycles bike course or the Thomas Dargie run course. During the race you will help direct racers along the course, warn other trail users that a race is in progres, temporarily stop non-race traffic so that athletes can pass safely and encourage our athletes while they give their all on the trails! You may also be asked to transport some signs, flagging materials and/or other items to Race Central following the race. Marshals must bring a working smartphone.
First Aid - on course - approximate time commitment 7 hours
First aid attendants must have up-to-date first aid certification and be confident on a mountain bike. Volunteers will meet at Village Park at approximately 8am and will be assigned positions along the course. Duties will include assisting athletes who need first aid attention, in consultation with the medical director and race director as required. On-course first aid attendants must bring a working smartphone. If you register for this job we will ask you to provide documentation about current first aid certification.
Course sweep - approximate time commitment 6 hours
Our course sweeps will be a mountain biker or runner. As sweep, you will follow the last athlete during a portion of the course to ensure no one is left behind and let marshals know along the way that their job is done. Course sweep must bring a working smartphone.
De-flagger - approximately time commitment 3 to 6 hours
Our course de-flagging crew sets out after all racers have completed the course to remove signage and flagging from the route. Our relationship with the landowners and the community depend on our reputation of leaving no trace following our event, so the de-flagging crew is a very important part of the team. Ideally this is done immediately following the race, but it could also be done the following day in a pinch.
Take-down crew - approximate time commitment 2-5 hours
Our take-down crew meets at VIllage Park at approximately 2pm ready to help us take down tents, fencing and other equipment and transport it to storage where it will eagerly await its next event. Depending on the support we get from other volunteers, this role could be more or less involved.
