What is Age Grading?

AGE GRADED Category points are determined by place based on Age Graded Results. The Age Graded Calculator has been around for decades and was built by Alan Avery. Ages 20-30 are in the OPEN CLASS and their times do not get graded and you earn points based on the final time at the event. This is because the open class is considered to be the age of the fastest possible time for a distance. Oftentimes this is the world record!

The age factor is a coefficient that adjusts performance based on age and gender.

The age graded result is your time adjusted by the age factor.

Since athletes below 20 and over 30 are considered to be slower (potentially because of age) their performances get calculated to estimate what they may have run at the open class ages. This is also a fun comparison to help even the playing field for runners outside of the open class.

Check out this example! A 51 year old male that runs 28:00 for a 5K receives an age-graded time of 24:22
A 54 year old male that runs 28:00 for a 5K receives an age-graded time of 23:47. By doing this, it levels the age groups out.

Age-Graded Race Times and Points will be available the Monday after each event. Age Grading is done for those younger than 20 and older than 30. The 20-30 age range is OPEN CLASS. Those results will be calculated based on the actual time you ran.

All participants receive points for the following categories - OVERALL, OVERALL (AGE GRADED), MASTERS, MASTERS (AGE GRADED), AGE GROUPS (AGE GRADED)

Points earned are as followed:

1st - 100
2nd - 90
3rd - 80
4th - 70
5th - 60
6th and Over - 50

Complete 4 of 7 ShaZam Racing events to be eligible. Or race more! The more you race, the more points you can earn!

5. Detweiller at Dark (July 24) - the IHSA State XC Course in concert grade format

6. Chocolate Turkey (November 26) - Start Thanksgiving right!

7. Run, Run, Rudolph (December 12) - A Christmas time staple!

14 & Under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-59, 90+

Prizes will be mailed out the week of the 14th of December. Double dipping is not allowed. Although we will keep track of your points in every category, you can only win in one. Additionally, if you place in more than one, you would ONLY win the level (monetary) that is biggest. For example, if you are 2nd Overall Masters Age-Graded ($300) and also won your Age-Graded age group ($150), you would win the Age-Graded Masters award because it is worth more.

Complete 4 of the 7 events and get a FREE RC Athletic Club Shirt! Shirts will be available at the packet pickup for Run, Run, Rudolph. If Run, Run, Rudolph is your last event, your shirt will be available after the race.
