This year, I'm riding with the Tour de Friends team in the Gran Fondo Lake Huron because I know firsthand how important it is to have the right healthcare resources in the right place at the right time.

A few years ago, I developed a persistent headache on one side of my head that simply would not go away. After speaking with my family doctor in Toronto, he urged me to go to the Southampton Hospital Emergency Department immediately. He was concerned that I might have giant cell arteritis (GCA), a serious autoimmune disease that can lead to permanent blindness if treatment isn't started quickly.

The team at Southampton acted immediately. Blood work was done, and because my symptoms strongly suggested GCA, I was started on high-dose steroids without delay. Within two days, I was seen by a neurologist at Owen Sound Hospital, who arranged both a CT scan and a biopsy. Both tests were completed within a week of my visit to the emergency department.

Just four days later, the neurologist called with wonderful news. My CT scan was clear, the biopsy showed no evidence of GCA, and I could safely stop taking the steroids. Within two weeks of first walking into Southampton Hospital, I had answers, peace of mind, and confidence that my headache was not something life-changing.

That experience reminded me how fortunate we are to have excellent healthcare close to home. Across the Brightshores hospitals, there are approximately $14 million in equipment and infrastructure needs.
