TEAM CAPTAIN AND MEMBERS
Dash for Dialysis RULES and GUIDELINES
It is the team captain’s responsibility to ensure that all team members are aware of and follow the rules.
These rules are in place to make the Dash for Dialysis relay Run safe and fun for participants, volunteers, and observers.
General Rules:
- NO HEADPHONES. Running with headphones is unsafe as it impedes the ability to hear traffic, directions from race officials and volunteers.
- Dash for Dialysis Relay Run 2026 will start at 6:00 am SHARP in Ben Auger Memorial Park, Calling Lake, Alberta.
- Prior to their anticipated start, runners must check-in at the station at the beginning of their assigned leg. The runner’s start time will be recorded at the time of tagged by or arrived by the previous runner.
- All runners/walkers must complete the online or paper waiver prior to the race day.
- Transfer between teammates will occur in the tent located at each checkpoint. Transfer of bear spray will be the basis for the starting time of the next runner.
- Run on the shoulder or far right of the road facing, along the white line. Do not run in the driving lane or center of the road.
- Support and drop-off vehicles banners are issued with the team race kit. These must be prominently displayed on the appropriate vehicles.
- Runners are responsible to know the route (see race map)
- Liquor or prohibited drugs will not be allowed. Any team observed with open liquor or prohibited drugs on the course will be subjected to immediate disqualification and will be reported to the RCMP.
- Out of respect for the commitment of Dash for Dialysis volunteers, absolutely no physical or verbal abuse will be tolerated.
- NO running with pets or strollers.
- Captain is responsible to pick up of team SWAG package at Lakeview Sport Center on Friday, August 28, 2026, between 5-7 pm.
Forced Start:
- Purpose:
Forced starts are used to manage race times and ensure all teams finish within daylight or other specified time constraints.
- Timing:
In relay races, particularly long-distance ones, teams may have a designated time limit. If a team is behind schedule, a forced start for the next runner is initiated. An additional 10-minute per-force start will be added to the total running time of the whole team.
- To ensure that the race can be completed within daylight or projected time of 13 hrs, forced starts will be initiated throughout the latter legs of the relay. Please see race guide for details of the forced start.
- Runners must obey the instructions of race officials, RCMP, Fire Department and volunteers.
Runner Substitution:
These rules apply to substitution for the part of a leg.
- If a runner is unable to complete their assigned leg, a substitute runner may be selected from the same team.
- The substitute runner must take the bear spray from the replace runner, upon completing the leg, the runner must immediately report the substitution to the station marshal.
- If a substitution occurs before the start of a leg, please notify the check-in volunteers or the station marshal prior to beginning the leg.
- A penalty will be assessed if a leg is split by two runners who both have or both will run another to complete leg, meaning the team completed the race with less or more than 12 runners.
- In such cases, only a longer leg may be shared, and it may be divided between no more than two (2) runners.
- Please NOTE: If you are sharing a leg with 2 runners/walkers above the 12 registered runners, your team will NOT qualify for the ‘fastest time’ award. An additional 10-minute will be added to your team total running time.
- Switching Runner in the middle of a leg is not permitted.
Safety Rules
The following rules have been developed to make the Dash for Dialysis Relay Run a safe and enjoyable race for the runners, supporters, volunteers, and race officials. It is essential to the success of the race that these safety rules are adhered to.
- LEG 1, 2 & 3 – MANDATORY: Your leg 1, 2 and possibly 3 MUST wear SAFETY VEST!
- All teams must abide by the provisions of the Highway Traffic Act of Alberta and follow the directives of the race officials.
- Left turns must be done safely.
- Motorhomes may not be used as support vehicles.
- Bicycles may not be used to support runners on the course at any time.
- Support vehicle will follow the runners at safe distance.
- CHECKPOINTS - All vehicles MUST park in the ditch clearly off the road after the checkpoint, only support vehicle will be allowed to idle after the checkpoint in support for the next runner.
- At checkpoint station, vehicle may use the designated drop off zones to stop and drop off a runner. Do not let runners out the vehicle in the middle of the road.
- When stopping, vehicles must pull off the road with left wheels parallel to, and two feet from the while line. Please no stopping in the middle of the road.
- When pulled over, hazard lights must be on.
- Amber light or hazard light from the support vehicles must be always on.
Bear Spray Requirements
We are requiring all runners to carry bear spray from the beginning of race to the end of the race whilst running. Not every person needs to purchase bear spray – you can pass it from runner to runner at each relay station. However, if you will be utilizing the forced start on Leg 3, 6, 9 and/or 11, you’ll need to be sure that those runners have their own bear spray as they won’t be “tagged’ by the previous leg runner. For example, start you leg 1 runner with the bear spray which can then be passed all the way through leg 5. Then make sure your leg 6 runner has bear spray that can be pass it to leg 8. Your leg 9 & 11 runner will need their own spray. So, three or four cans of bear spray for a team that will be in the forced starts. Teams that know they won’t be in the forced starts will only need one can of spray.
