This inaugural event in Jack London Historic State Park will take you through the heart of the Beauty Ranch that Jack London developed in the early 1900's. After writing famous works such as The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea-Wolf, he settled on the ranch, where he pursued innovative agricultural practices and continued writing, including his novel The Valley of the Moon.
Starting and finishing in the picnic area next to the London Cottage, the trail run takes you past the famous concrete silos, offering views of the vineyard and leading into the pristine hillsides filled with madrone, Douglas fir, black oak, buckeye, bigleaf maple, and grassy meadows on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain.
The following quotes from Jack London will give you a feel for his Ranch of Good Intentions: "Across Sonoma Mountain, wisps of sea fog are stealing the afternoon sun smolders in the drowsy sky. I have everything to make me glad I am alive. I am filled with dreams and mysteries."
"I am rebuilding worn-out hillside lands that were worked out and destroyed by our wasteful California pioneer farmers. I believe the soil is our one indestructible asset, and by green manures, nitrogen-gathering cover crops, animal manure, rotation of crops, proper tillage, and draining, I am getting results which the Chinese have demonstrated for forty centuries."
"I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."
