Welcome to the Molokai Holokai Ho‘olaule‘a

The Molokai Holokai Ho‘olaule‘a is a 2-day festival on the island of Molokai hosted by Youth in Motion.

The 2026 Race Lineup Includes:

  • Day 1 (Friday, July 17th, 2026): Maui to Molokai Challenge

  • Day 2 (Saturday, July 18th, 2026): * Kamalo Run (Downwinder)

    • Holo Fun Run (Distances: 16K, 5K, and 1K)

    • Molokai Holokai Festivities

We are celebrating our 23rd year of honoring our youth! We are not your typical race, and we never have been since our inception in 2003. The primary purpose of this event is to celebrate and inspire our youth in everything they do.

Youth in Motion's Mission:

"Empower, Equip, Educate, Challenge, and Motivate Youth through activities that engage and develop their mental, emotional, creative, and physical skills on land and in the ocean."

The Molokai Holokai Mission:

"The Molokai Holokai will embody our inherent Hawaiian cultural values—taking care of the land and sea, giving back to the community, honoring our host culture and language, and respecting others."

Event Highlights & Schedule

Friday's event starts from DT Fleming Beach on Maui. Racers will cross the Pailolo Channel in a 26-mile race open to all paddle craft and select wind craft. The Maui to Molokai Race is our vehicle to celebrate our youth and connect with our community.

All-Inclusive On-Island Transportation! Don't stress the logistics while you are here! Transportation on the island of Molokai is completely all-inclusive for both your gear and your person. We will make sure you and your equipment get exactly where you need to be.

Weekend Activities Include:

  • Maui to Molokai 26-Mile Crossing

  • A beach clean-up event, involving ‘ohana (families) and keiki (children) in hands-on activities that reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship

  • Kamalo Downwinder (10-Mile)

  • 5-Mile Paddle Race (Tentative)

  • Keiki and Makua Race (3/4 Mile)

  • Holo Fun Run (16K, 16K Relay, 5K, and 1K Keiki Fun Run)

  • Trash Art Contest

  • Cultural Workshops, Live Music, and Local Food!

Age Divisions:

  • Age calculations are based on the participant's age on Event Day.

  • Juniors are classified as 17 years old or younger on Event Day.

Our History Youth in Motion (YIM) was formed in 1998 and received its non-profit status in 2003. To celebrate, we organized a Pailolo channel crossing and the Na ‘Opio Hana Pa‘a (A Celebration of Youth Opportunities) festival. That first Maui to Molokai crossing was centered around youth—some as young as eight and ten years old!—with adults crossing alongside to support them. Today, we are proud to see some of those same kids competing as world-class professional athletes.

Celebrating our 23rd year, this annual event has continuously evolved alongside trends in non-motorized ocean crafts. Day 1 focuses on the channel crossing to Molokai, while Day 2 is a vibrant celebration of our youth.

Youth In Motion's Mission "Empower, Equip, Educate, Challenge and Motivate Youth through activities that engage and develop their mental, emotional, creative, and physical skills on the land and in the ocean."

Where Your Funds Go YIM serves as an umbrella organization for local groups like Molokai Muay Thai Boxing and Molokai Body Boarding, with new ocean programs coming soon. All profits from this event go directly toward:

  • Sustaining the Molokai Holokai Ho‘olaule‘a

  • YIM programs and annual insurance

  • Building our scholarship fund

  • A community fund that Molokai youth organizations can apply to for support

The Molokai Holokai Ho‘olaule‘a Molokai is the epicenter of world-class paddling, with prestigious events starting or finishing on our shores. Our mission with the Molokai Holokai Ho‘olaule‘a is to bring paddlers, athletes, and the community together for a festive weekend of healthy activities. For those who prefer the land, we also feature a 5K fun run and a 10-mile run!

Uncompromising Safety on the Water Your safety is our absolute priority. We dedicate a safety budget of approximately $60,000 across the two-day event. This comprehensive safety plan includes individual GPS trackers for all racers and ensures a safe, highly monitored ratio of safety ocean officials and support boats to athletes.

  • Camping & Gear Shipping: Camping is available at Kaoaini Beach Park—which is also the starting line for our 5K run!—for just $10 per person. To make your travel easier, you can ship your camp gear ahead of time with Kamaka Air, and our team will pick it up for you.

  • Local transportation to major accommodations (West End, Hotel Molokai, Molokai Shores, Wavecrest, and Kaoaini Beach Park). (A suggested gratuity for your drivers is always appreciated and makes them very happy!)

  • Round-trip transportation from the harbor and listed accommodations to the prizegiving ceremony.

  • Bonus for Two-Day Racers: If you are racing on Day 1 and Day 2, we’ve got your logistics covered! We will provide your personal transportation to the Day 2 start line and securely haul all your gear there for you.

  • Departure shuttles to the harbor or airport for boat trips back to Maui or outbound flights.

Molokai Protocol

Molokai Protocol When visiting our island, we ask all athletes to embrace the Molokai Protocol. This means arriving with humility, respecting our local community, honoring our host culture, and helping us take care of the land and sea. Please take a moment to watch our Molokai Protocol Video so we can all share the ocean with respect.

Escort Boat & Reef Restrictions To further protect our resources, there is absolutely no fishing or diving off the reefpermitted by any escort boats at any time.

⚠️ Important Course Safety Boundary: Stay in the Deep Blue Our designated course is the deep blue channel. The shallow, turquoise waters—off Wavecrest in particular—are strictly out of bounds.

A simple rule to remember on the water: If you can see the sand on the ocean floor, you are too close to the reef.

All athletes must remain in the deep blue waters at all times. This boundary is strictly enforced to protect our fragile nearshore reefs and to ensure the safety of our local divers who are actively gathering food for their families.

Strict Foiling Rules & Trial Event Status Please be aware that Saturday’s foil race is under close scrutiny as a trial event for 2026. Because of this, the following rules will be strictly enforced:

  • Time & Location: Foiling on Molokai is only allowed on the designated race course between Friday the 17th and Monday the 20th.
  • Registration Required: Foiling is completely off-limits to anyone not officially registered for Saturday’s race.
  • Kamalo Run: Only registered Saturday participants are permitted to do the Kamalo run before and after the race.

Make the most of your Molokai Holokai weekend with our Day 2 festivities. To make things simple, you can sign up for all the day's activities at once using our Day 2 Registration and add to your registration.

Day 2 Event Lineup:

  • Morning: Kick things off on land! Choose from our 5K fun run, the 10-mile (16K) run, or a special 1K run just for the keiki (little ones).

  • Afternoon: The action continues on the water with the Kamalo Downwinder, alongside our dedicated Keiki Events and immersive Cultural Workshops.

West End Transportation & Shuttles: Staying on the West End? We have you covered! We will have a bus or passenger vans running at set times to pick you up and get you to the events. We will send out the exact transport links and shuttle schedules closer to race day so you can easily plan your rides.

Explore the Island & Community: Want to experience more of Molokai while you are here?

  • Paddling Regattas: Head down to the wharf to watch the thrilling final paddling regatta of the season! We are happy to provide rides so you can catch the action.
